Cardan Joints & Shafts

GKN's unique experience in the design, manufacture and service of propshafts has been fully exploited to produce high performance motorsport shafts.

Traditional steel designs have been reduced in weight; the transmission of vibration has been overcome by the use of sophisticated diaphragm centre bearings and specialised torsional couplings. The Universal joints have been upgraded with special close tolerance bearing designs, combined with Cardan advanced thrust bearings and multi-lip seals. All this work allows more choice to the car designer – for track racing this technology allows a smaller joint to be used, for the rally and endurance events it permits higher speeds and more power without weight penalties.

High-speed GKN Constant Velocity joints have been developed to overcome higher installation angles. This advanced shaft concept has also been extended by the use of specialist materials, with aluminium, or titanium replacing the steel. Even in the area of extra light composite fibre shafts these alloy designs can offer similar performance with superior impact resistance.

CVJ In its International Research Centres, GKN Driveline is developing new CVJs designed to reduce weight, minimise NVH and improve safety, this technology is being combined with advances in materials technology to provide real advantage to the leading race teams.
